Insurance Coverage of Donor Breast Milk

I learned something that gave me a lot of hope for our tiniest babies.

Across the United States, more than 17 states and Washington, D.C., now require insurance to cover medically necessary donor breast milk for vulnerable infants—especially babies born early or with serious health challenges.

Why is this so important?

For premature babies, human milk isn’t just food. It can be life-saving medicine.

One of the most serious risks for preterm infants is a disease called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which affects the intestines. Research shows that human milk dramatically lowers this risk. When a mother’s own milk isn’t available yet, donor breast milk can protect these fragile babies during their most critical days.

The challenge is that donor milk must be carefully screened, pasteurized, and distributed through certified milk banks. Without insurance coverage, access can be difficult for hospitals and families.

That’s why these new laws matter so much.

States like Massachusetts and California are expanding coverage, and some policies now ensure that babies can continue receiving donor milk even after leaving the hospital if their doctor recommends it.

This is such an important step toward making sure every baby—no matter where they are born—has access to the safest possible start in life.

At Healthy Babies, Happy Moms, we believe every mother deserves support, and every baby deserves the best possible beginning. Seeing progress like this reminds me how powerful awareness, advocacy, and compassionate policy can be.

Tiny babies deserve big protection. And this is a step in the right direction. 💛
