Important COVID-19 Information from Healthy Babies, Happy Moms CEO, Kathy Moren RN IBCLC

To our patients and their families,

In light of the WHO declaration yesterday of the COVID-19 pandemic and the concern of spread in the United States, I wanted to let you know what we are doing to ensure the safety of our patients, their families and our employees.

As a home health agency licensed by the RI Department of Health, HBHM receives updates daily from the director, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott. These updates include the CDC recommendations for health care providers so that we know how to respond to potential infections and prevent the spread of the virus. While I am confident that we always practice strict infection control, we are being particularly vigilant with excellent handwashing. We have Purell in all patient rooms and the restroom at our office. We have gloves and masks available for those who need or want them. All employees know that they should stay home if they have any symptoms or feel they have been in contact with someone who does. We are practicing the social distancing recommended by the CDC. We are now also required to screen patients prior to booking an appointment by asking four COVID 19 specific questions. We will still see a patient with a positive response, but we also need to report it so that the patient can be tested.

Fortunately, our patient population of mother and babies is not the demographic at highest risk. However, we assess all our patients for symptoms and are aware of how to proceed if we suspect someone might be ill. We also advise that you can and should continue breastfeeding if you test positive for COVID-19, as it will enhance your baby’s immunologic response. We request that you let us know if you or anyone you encounter tests positive for COVID-19 after seeing one of our staff members. We will keep you informed if anyone on our staff becomes ill.

Lastly, we are passionate about our patients receiving the care they need. Our pump manufacturers have assured us that they will have pumps available for our patients. We do offer virtual lactation consults, via Zoom Video conferencing, for those who do not want to leave their home or have a RN/IBCLC in their home. However, we will continue to see patients as usual until advised not to by the Health Department. Please also remember that our patients can call us anytime with questions or concerns. We are committed to the health of you and your baby and will be here for you if you need it.

Sincerely,
